Bidding Farewell
by Todd Wells / December 10, 2008
Last weekend I raced up in Boulder at the two UCI events. The races went well for me; I won on Saturday and was second on Sunday. The weather was perfect with temperatures in the mid seventies and plenty of sunshine. All the top riders were there minus Jonathan Page who races in Europe all year.
The best part about the Boulder races is the crowds and the course on Sunday. Sunday's race has huge crowds that may be second only to the crowds at Nationals. The venue is at a South Boulder school and held in a bowled out field area. There are tight technical turns, some small hills and a sand pit. Pretty much the perfect high altitude urban cross course.
Boulder is home to quite a few professional cyclists so it's really cool to see all the racers come out. It's even more fun to hang out with them after the race. Most riders that don't race cross are on a bit of a vacation right now. They have finished their season a few weeks ago and haven't really started training for next year yet. I'm looking forward to that time after cross is over.
This past week I got to do quite a bit of training. I also managed to get out on the dirt bike and play golf. Dan Bowman and I met in Aztec, NM to do some throttle twisting. Everything was great until I went to start my bike and realized my kick-starter had fallen off. I managed to pop start the bike but had to be super careful not to stall it out in the sand washes or I wouldn't be able to get it started again. We made it back to the trucks with out an incident and I didn't crash once that day since I was being really careful not to stall the bike. Maybe I should always ride with out a starter.
Durango held it's first cyclocross race of the season this past weekend. We had about sixty riders, which is a record turnout for us. It's amazing to see how much cross has grown over the past few years. Here in Durango just a few years ago there were about five of us who raced and would practice together. Now we have real races with more spectators then some mountain bike races.
This is my last blog so thanks for reading.
I'll see you out on the trail.......
