My Offseason

by Todd Wells / October 15, 2008

My main season is now over and that means one thing, break time. I look forward to taking a break in the fall after the mountain bike season every year. It's a way to reflect on what I accomplished during the mountain bike season and recharge the batteries for cyclocross.

This year I have had my best mountain bike season ever so I really enjoyed kicking back and reflecting on a great season. In addition to that I managed to squeeze in a bunch of fun stuff too.

In the fall a bunch of local Durango pros get together and have a big garage sale where we get rid of our extra stuff from the previous season. This year I managed to make quite a bit of room in my garage. I may have had a bit too much fun during the sale and paid for it the next day.

I am really into golf and my fall break is when I get to play a lot. This year I took two weeks off and I think I played at least twelve of those days. Golf is a crazy game, one day I think I'm making some type of progress and the next day I'm back to my old self. I did a lot of work in the weight room this summer and in addition to helping my cycling, I've managed to get about ten more yards out of my irons and twenty to thirty out of my driver.

I also like to hit the dirt jumps when I'm in town. During the summer all the college kids leave so the trails go down hill but now that school is back in they are built up again. The problem is I haven't ridden my slalom bike since last fall so it is taking me some time to get my skills back. Hopefully in another week or two I will be able to hit the new big section.

Meg, Winston and I just got back from the 24 Hours of Moab. I didn't race but did a pre ride with some of the GT folks. I had never been to the race or ridden the course but both are pretty cool. The only problem this weekend was forty MPH winds that nailed Moab all weekend. We camped out on Friday night and the car was shaking back and forth all night because of the wind. When we left the course we had sand everywhere and I think it took me at least two showers to get it all off and I only did two laps of the course.

Tomorrow I start training again and it's always a bit of a transition back onto the bike. I'm refreshed and looking forward to great cross season.

I wonder if I will get all the trees in the backyard cut down with out any major catastrophes.....
